The Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers (TAAHP) kicked off the 81st legislative session with a Rally Day on February 11, 2009 in Austin, Texas. Our goal was to bring a statewide coalition of builders, developers, and service industry professionals to the State Capitol to meet with elected officials and their staff to discuss issues crucial to the Affordable Housing industry.
The day started off with an orientation breakfast at the Sheraton Hotel, where members were briefed on key public policy and legislative issues and received materials to leave with legislators and their staff.
TAAHP staff scheduled over 50 appointments throughout the legislature and assigned member teams to meet with elected officials. Staff developed literature to distribute to each official and their aides. Morning meetings were followed by an Affordable Housing Luncheon featuring Speaker of the House, the Honorable Joe Straus, Texas House of Representatives. During the luncheon, members and guests heared brief remarks on the state of affairs for affordable housing in Texas, as well as our goals for the upcoming session.
Rally Day highlighted important issues facing our industry and served as a launching point for increasing member participation and solidifying our relationships with Texas Senators and Representatives at the state and local level.
